If you plan to make gifts and donations an important part of your fundraising you should think about different people in different ways. Major donors are people who give significantly more than your other donors when you ask for support.
A local museum decide there are potential major donors in their community. They put out a local newspaper appeal asking supporters to sponsor certain museum items. Their committee line up people they knew might be interested and show them the article. This leads to three people donating £1,000 each. In return the museum offers private tours to each donor and a small group of friends. Future plans include an annual event where these donors share their ideas for the museum.
